Artist Statement:

The Rosy Maple moth is indigenous to North America. It symbolizes rebirth and transformation.  Moths and other pollinators are threatened by deforestation. These shoes serve to care for the planet and its tiniest creatures.
The color palette is representative of the land and water.  Our human activity and consumption have caused microplastics to exist everywhere.  Microplastics are dangerous to all species. These shoes serve as a reminder to reduce our usage of plastics for the health of our planet and our bodies.
Serena Teakell Rigby is the owner and creator of Living Dead Threads. Creating upcycled clothing is her way of fighting fast fashion and textile pollution. The U.S. alone produces 17 million tons of textile water per year.  We must act now and do our part to consume less new trendy clothing and opt for secondhand, vintage, or upcycled apparel.  Each piece of clothing at Living Dead Threads is one of a kind and always upcycled.
"I love making ugly, boring, secondhand items look cool again.  It gives the garment a second life and wearing a unique item that no one else has..and also..fuck fast fashion." --Serena
