Artist Statement:

This painting depicts the ocean waves rampaging as they flood a town. For this piece I chose to incorporate some cultural elements from my home the island of Puerto Rico. Elements like one of the common tropical flowers that grow on the island placed at the bottom of the piece, standing at the left part of the painting is a garita del Morro which is a very well-known old place for my country and finally, the old brick roads that form our capital’s streets. With this painting I wanted to address how climate change affects weather phenomenon and how those among other issues cause island nations to flood and, in more dire future cases sink. This is a topic which is important to me because my home has been a recent example of the devastation of climate change, beautiful towns are flooded, damaged buildings are destroyed by storms and erosion, and cultural treasures are at risk of disappearing along with the shores of many islands as they are little by little overcome by the sea.
