Artist Statement:
In the Manila area of the Philippines, more than 6.8 million people live on land that will likely be submerged in the next thirty years, where the rate of rising sea levels is 3-4 times faster than the global average. Especially in developing regions of the Philippines, displacement will affect the 2 work, health, and overall condition of people who already struggle to provide for themselves and their families. This ceramic fishing hut foreshadows this displacement with its blue-glazed posts and underside, providing a glimpse of a home underwater; furthermore, dark window openings and the doorway show the eerie emptiness of the abandoned dwelling place. The mirror on which the piece rests not only represents the rising water but also reminds viewers—as they peer over the top and see themselves reflected—that they, too, may be responsible for these climate-related changes, and that they have a responsibility to protect unseen people groups.
