Artist Statement:
Just as black mold is toxic to humans; humans are toxic to our environment. We, as a species, invade places and spaces, and over time slowly begin to eat away at what was once there. We consume the land, the plants, the animals, we pollute the air we breathe, corrupt the seas, pillage the land until there is nothing left. Then, we move like spores, to a new place and begin the process all over again. What was once lush, vibrant lands that were full of life are now decaying, lifeless, and ruined.
I chose the state of Texas because I wanted to represent a place that people can resonate with. Texas is our home, and we are consuming all the natural resources just like a toxic mold does to the space it inhabits. I wanted to focus on something people can visualize, that they can be familiar with, and have this piece create a real, lasting connection with the viewer.
I want the viewer to realize that we are the black mold.
