Artist Statement:

Many species are being endangered by climate change. This piece displays some of those most affected.

Clockwise from 12:00 noon:

Golden Tree Frog: This frog is already considered extinct due to climate change affecting their habitat.

Pollinators and the plants they pollinate: Bees, hummingbirds and other pollinators are being affected by climate change. Climate change is causing habitat loss. Bees in particular fail to migrate to cooler areas and establish new hives. This has the effect of of decreasing the population of plants that need pollination, including food crops like wheat, corn and peaches to name a few.

Thick-billed Parrots: Climate change is increasing the number of parasitic fly larvae that feed on their chicks and can kill them.

Snow Leopard: Rising temperatures have resulted in shrinking habitats and increased competition for food.

Polar Bear: Perhaps the most endangered currently.  Ongoing depletion of sea ice has injured the bears’ ability to find food. Melting ice also increases human/bear contact putting the bears at greater risk for being killed when searching for food.

European Hamster:  A combination of climate change, agricultural practices and light pollution have dramatically decreased the numbers of this hamster, with predictions that this species, which is an integral part of the food chain in Europe, will go extinct in 3 decades.

Human child (center panel): Humans, particularly those being born today, will bear the brunt of our inactivity in changing our habits to benefit the planet. Unless we decrease our dependence on fossil fuels and other forms of carbon-emitting pollutants, we endanger ourselves as a species.
